The Speakeasies Townhouse Photo Shoot : The Speakeasies are lovely group of dancers taking a step back in time to an era of Burlesque / Cabaret shows. A form of entertainment featuring song and dance with acts including striptease, expensive costumes, bawdy humor while patrons watch on and drink. A new generation nostalgic for the spectacle and perceived glamour of the old times determined to bring burlesque back. This group established themselves at the Townhouse Bar in Venice Beach California - 52 Windward Ave. (West of Pacific), Venice, CA 90291. Where they put on shows quite regularly. Vibrant L.A. : I think of myself more as a visual artist than just a photographer because of my traditional art background. I am an artist at heart, as it has always been my passion. I have lived on or near the beach my whole life as well. So I have learned to always carry my camera with me. Just in case of that one moment. This exhibit is a collection of those moments I have put together. Once I gather the images for this show the first thing I noticed were the vibrant colors. So the name of the show came easy. As a Venice Beach local for well over ten years has only created a perfect backdrop for such a person as myself.

I would doodle here and there, but it wasn’t until I went to high school with the instructor Larry White that I really began to explore my talent. GLOW Festival 2010 : Glow is an all-night cultural experience featuring original commissions by artists that re-imagine Santa Monica Beach as a playground for thoughtful and participatory temporary artworks. Glow is a production of the City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Foundation. Unfortunately I did not get to the event till after 2am, and didn't get to explore all the sites along the beach. Though the crowds were still there, and at 3am the police made there presence know on horseback, ATVs, and on foot. As Santa Monica seemed to turn into a big beach rave.

The Grilled Cheese Truck at RPL : So Brian saw this Grilled Cheese Truck on Melrose about a week ago as he was coming back from a lunch meeting nearby. The truck was parked in the parking lot at a cupcakery and the line was easily 50 people long. As he walked into the cupcake shop to buy all his employees cupcakes (thanks Bri!) he thought, “man that’d be so awesome in front of RPL!” We’d heard about this truck before, winning accolades on the Food Network on shows such as Unwrapped and on The Cooking Channel (the Cheezy Mac and Rib is slowly gaining national fame). Well one thing lead to another and a week later, I got THE Grilled Cheese Truck to park in front of OUR little building to serve up some “cheesy goodness” to our employees and anyone in the neighborhood! Seriously guys, if you live in the LA area and haven’t eaten at the GCT you’re missing out (follow their tweets or head to their website to see where they’re parking). Open for 2 hours, there was a consistent line from the moment it pulled up until the second it closed the gate (they had to turn a few people down! Sorry guys!) We got lunch for all our hard workin’ employees and handed out lab coupons for anyone that wanted lunch at the lab (nice meeting you Gabe!) The chefs were even nice enough to cook up a special “parenthood” sandwich for Brian and Eileen who had their first child together the next day (how cute is that!?) We loved hosting the truck because this is the busiest time of the year for us (and all of our photographers!) Everyone has been so non-stop, we barely get a chance to relax and sit back for a few hours. Having this lunch truck allowed us to meet our neighbors, say a big THANKS to all of our employees for all the hard work they’ve been putting in and to our local photographers too! So THANK YOU all!

Super Girl 2010 : Supergirl Jam 2010 /Sunday, August 22, 2010 /Windward at Ocean Front Walk Sunday, August 22, 2010 marked the 4th Annual Supergirl Jam at Venice Beach, California. Embodying the power of DC Comics' iconic hero, SUPERGIRL, this event marks the third stop in the 2010 Supergirl Jam series, the action sports industry's largest all-female competition and lifestyle festival. Over 50 female action sports pros gathered in Venice Beach, CA for a day of competition and empowerment. A 20-foot tall course onto which 80,000 pounds of snow was packed for the snowboard rail jam contest. National Go Topless Day 2010 : There is a US organization, claiming that women have the same constitutional right to be bare chested in public places as men. Maitreya, Rael, spiritual leader and founder of goTopless.org states: "as long as men can be topless, constitutionally women should have the same right, or men should also be forced to wear something hiding their chest." Why a National GoTopless Protest day? Gotopless.org claims constitutional equality between men and women on being topless in public. Currently, women who dare to be topless in public in the US are repeatedly being arrested, fined, humiliated, criminalized. On SUNDAY AUGUST 22nd, 2010, topless women will rally in great numbers across the USA to protest this gross inequality in the law and will demand that their fundamental right to be topless be acknowledged where men already enjoy that right according to the 14th amendment of the Constitution (please see our exact legal argument on the right to be topfree for women under "14th amendment" in news section) Why in August? On August 26, 1920, following a 72-year struggle, the U.S. Constitution was amended to grant women the right to vote. And in 1970, as an ongoing reminder of women’s equality, Congress declared August 26 “Women’s Equality Day.” But even in the 21st century, women need to stand up and demand that equality in fact – not just in words. Note that in 2010, GoTopless will have a large rally nationwide in honor of the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and Women's Equality Day. Charlie Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament 2010 : Started in 1964, this event was named after Charlie Saikley the “Godfather of Beach Volleyball” who passed away in 2005. This party/tournament which spans basically all weekend, draws thousands of partiers and amateur and professional volleyball players. Pictures cannot do this event/weekend justice and it’s not hard to argue that this is one of if not the best weekend of summer! 2010 Manhattan Beach Six-Man was held July 31, 2010. The city cracked down hard and heavy on the event this year, but people still came in droves! No music, bull horns, and pole dancing was allowed. Plus they completely gated off the event, and searched every back pack. This just led for more people to go to the local bars, and create block parties. Personally this is my favorite event of the year!! enjoy!

The LaLa's Xmas Show 2009 : The LaLa's had there Christmas show Dec 26th. Where I got the chance to shoot their act and the girls back stage. The Lalas is L.A's premiere burlesque show with a twist. This live entertainment spectacle combines burlesque dancing with modern pop, and a hint of rock. As it is not your normal everyday bras and undies show, be prepared to be on the edge of your bar stool as L.A's most seasoned professional dancers hit the stage with an eye brow raised and tongue in their cheek. Erin Lamont who created the LaLa's has been working professionally as a choreographer/dancer/model ever since she graduated from college with a B.A in Dance, and a B.B.A in Marketing from Western Michigan University. She has worked with notable artists; Kevin Rudolph, the Veronicas, and Lady Gaga. Her choreography can be seen on; L.A Fashion Week, the 2009 Miss USA Pageant, the 2008 Miss Universe Pageant in Vietnam, NBC, Exercise TV, and ESPN. Other credits include; Warner Brothers Film "The Lonely Dog" directed by Avika Goldsman, Skechers, Nike, Nuskin, ABC, Puma, Wella, Wyndham Resorts, Playboy, EMI Records, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Disney, Spike TV, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the NBA L.A Clippers Dance team. National Go Topless Day 2009 : Gotopless.org is organizing its second annual National Go-Topless day on Sunday Aug 23rd 2009 to claim the constitutional right of women to be topless or topfree in public where men already have that right. "As long as men are allowed to be topless in public, women should have the same constitutional right. Or else, men should have the wear something to hide their chests". Rael Spiritual leader of the Raelian Movement and founder of gotopless.org. In our society, men and women are supposed to have equal rights. But women are commonly arrested, fined and humiliated for daring to go topless in public, a freedom men have had for decades. To protest this unconstitutional gender discrimination, GoTopless.org is holding National Go-Topless Day events in cities nationwide. Thousands of women will be baring their chests that day in the name of equal rights, and we hope you'll be there too! The marches will be followed by an equal rights speech, and artists performances. Six Man Volleyball Tournament 2009 : I attended what I think is the best summer party this weekend. The Charlie Saikley 6-man (now referred to as 6-person) Beach Volleyball tournament in Manhattan Beach California. Where the volleyball players have to dress-up in costume, then play the match. Venice Vintage Motorcycle Rally - July 12th 2009 : On Sunday July 12…the glorious roar of vintage iron graced the street of Abbot Kinney once again. Whether you drool over Ducati’s or groan for Guzzi’s, your moto appetite should have been satisfied. Led by Brady Walker & Shannon Sweeney, the notorious Venice Vintage Motorcycle Club (VVMC) had another successful rally! A vintage bike procession traveled through the Santa Monica Mountains from 9am to 11am. After there was judging & awards, a photography exhibit, superior barbeque by Uncle Creepo, & a beer garden catered by Big Foot Lodge for all of the thirsty revelers. T-shirts & posters designed by VVMC graphic designer Jeff Verges commemorating the event are still for sale. Sponsors for this event was Nikki’s, Trim Hair Salon, Garage Company & ASTARS. A handmade wallet created by One Too Many was also raffled off. A portion of the proceeds benefited the Boys & Girls Club of Venice. MUSCLE BEACH JULY 4TH, 2009 The 75th Anniversary of Muscle Beach was celebrated at the July 4th, 2009 Mr. & Ms. Muscle Beach Bodybuilding, Figure and Bikini competition. The Title Sponsor MuscleTech was honored to have Acting Mayor Jan Perry along with the 11th District Councilman Bill Rosendahl, and Sophia Pina Cortez from the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department present a plaque to the Hall of Fame Inductees who attended the event. The Muscle Beach Venice Bodybuilding Hall of Fame inducted two outstanding individuals. Dr. Bernie Ernst, known for his television show “Body Buddies” and Relna Brewer McRae one of the four original founding members of Santa Monica Muscle Beach were inducted. The audience enjoyed the “Then and Now” entertainment provided by the father and son team of Misha and Ivan depicting the excellent gymnastic routines performed at Santa Monica Muscle Beach in the 1940’s. Jake Sawyer presented a superb bodybuilding posing routine that depicts the “now” of the world renown bodybuilding acclaim of Muscle Beach Venice. A number of Hall of Fame Inductees were on hand for the celebration including Bill Grant, Paula Boelsems, Bill Howard, Tony Pearson, John Balik, Gene Mosee and Elaine Hargitay for Mickey Hargitay. A record breaking number of athletes competed at Muscle Beach on July 4, 2009. Amateur Boxing - Rumble in Venice 2009 : The Muscle Beach's "Rumble in Venice" was held May 24th, 2009 at the Venice Recreation Center on Ocean Front Walk. The Amateur Boxing 2009 was presented by Pro Fight Supplements. The 2nd annual "Rumble in Venice" amateur Boxing was hosted by Ramon Espada of Espada Boxing Club in association with Joe Wheatley Productions and Venice Beach Recreation Center. There were roughly twenty-five 3-round bouts of amateur boxing including fighters from Espada, USC and UCLA Boxing clubs along with members of the Navy, Marines and Air Force in honor of Memorial Day Weekend. Monday, May 25: The Muscle Beach International Classic bodybuilding, figure, and bikini contests, which are open to all amateur athletes. The entry fee was $80. In conjunction with this will be the “Battle of the Branches” Armed Forces Bodybuilding Championships, which was open to all active, reserve, National Guard, and retired armed forces personnel. L.A. Urban Iditarod 2009 : The L.A. Urban Iditarod took place Saturday March 7th, 2009 in Venice Beach California. Now this isn't the Alaska Tundra so you can't have a sled dog race, or can you. How about instead of a sled you have a shopping cart, instead of dogs you have people pull the shoppng cart, and as for the "musher". Well, it's their job to get the drunken grunts to move that shopping cart. Oh wait, did I mention this is also a bar crawl? No, did I also mention that the teams dressed up in different themes and outfits? Befitting an organization set up for busy people, by busy people, we’ve kept our goals simple and our outcomes clear. Hollywood Blvd - 81st Oscar Set-up 2009 : The Academy Awards or "Oscars" is now always help at the Kodak Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. They start preparing for this one-time event a week ahead of times, and it amazes me how many people and big a deal this event is. The 81st Academy Awards ceremony was held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honor its selection of the best films of 2008 on February 22, 2009, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony was televised in the United States on ABC and on Sky Movies in high definition in the United Kingdom. Australian performer Hugh Jackman hosted the ceremony for the first time.[3] Oscar-nominated Laurence Mark served as the event's producer, while Oscar-winning writer and director Bill Condon served as executive producer. Slumdog Millionaire won eight awards, the most of the evening, including Best Picture and Best Director (Danny Boyle). The Curious Case of Benjamin Button led the nominations with a total of thirteen while Slumdog Millionaire received ten. The Dark Knight and Milk received eight nominations, and Doubt, The Reader, and Frost/Nixon each received five. WALL-E, the winner for Best Animated Feature, received six nominations, tying it with Beauty and The Beast for the most nominated animated film in Oscar history. The Academy hoped to rework the ceremony through an entirely new production team sworn to secrecy; however, the telecast proved to receive mainly mixed reviews from critics. Hot Import Nights 2008 - HIN LA : Hot Import Nights (HIN) is an auto show comprised of mainly tuner import cars. The show originated in California, but now tours various cities in the United States. Sponsors include Boost Mobile, The Army National Guard, Bridgestone Tires and NOS Energy Drinks. Hot Import Nights hosts single-night events in a number of different cities across the US, with an average of roughly two such events per month. The locales include standard metropolitan cities such as Los Angeles, CA, Boston, MA, San Mateo, CA, Seattle, WA, New York, NY, Miami, FL and Chicago, IL. The show is open to the public where individuals show off or exhibit their own vehicles or motorcycles. Many noteworthy hip-hop and rap musicians also perform at this show. There have also been performances by noteworthy DJ's, and electronic dance music artists. Unlike other auto shows, Hot Import Nights synthesizes a night club-like atmosphere with the nation’s toughest and most rigorous “tuner” (automotive modification) competitions. SIGGRAPH 2008 : The SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group/Graphics) convention this year was here in Los Angeles Aug. 12, 2008. Autodesk just has become the powerhouse in the industry, and announced new versions of most software I haven’t even begun to learn. Including the fact that I wasn’t quite aware that they had purchased Mudbox, a competitor of Z Brush. Their booth was jammed pack the entire day. Then all over the exhibit hall were signs of the upcoming move to stereoscopic. Which is a term you have to use to create the rehashed 3D movie crap they are putting in movies. All I thought is this more ’shit’ I have to learn.

Venice Storm 2008 : An unusual tropical storm pass by Venice Beach late night on August 14th 2008. Hundreds of lightning strikes danced around the sky in southern California that night, creating quite a magnificent show. They say lightning sensors even detected 445 ground strikes over a three hour period! This is very unusual for Southern California. Reminded me when I use to live in Florida.
